4 Rules for an elegant and luxury bedroom design

Written by Jelena Raicevic | 11 August 2022

Sleep is fundamental for our health and in average we spend 1/3 of our day sleeping. For this reason, a bedroom represents the place of rest and recovery, essential to face everyday life and to pursue one’s dreams as well as perform one’s duties. However, sleep and rest require more than a comfortable bed: the right atmosphere is necessary.

How do you create the typical intimate bedroom atmosphere by combining comfort with design sophistication?

For instance, by taking a cue from five-star hotel suites, where every detail is designed to evoke a feeling of luxury and to emphasize the excellence of Made in Italy design and the style of the environment, whether classic or contemporary.

Turning your bedroom, dedicated to rest and relaxation, into a room boasting luxury and elegance requires a double effort, because when designing it, it is necessary to pay attention to two aspects (rest and luxury) avoiding that they end up contrasting each other.

To balance out these two requirements - comfort and beauty - it is necessary to measure out the elements of one and the other.

Just like in a kitchen recipe, no one flavour should prevail over the other, they all should blend together to create a delicious dish with a recognisable identity.

In interior design, it works much the same way.

To create an elegant and luxurious bedroom without slipping into glitz as an end in itself, it is important to carefully plan every aspect of the furnishing project, so that the characterising elements - the richness of the decorative details, the quality of the furniture, the quality of the materials, etc. - are functional to the comfort and ergonomics of the furnishings and ease of use of the space.

Let us not forget that the bedroom is the place of rest, well-being and regeneration.

Here are the 4 style/design rules to follow for a result that strikes a perfect balance between luxury and comfort:

1. Planning and style: designing a luxury bedroom

Planning the room and choosing the style with which to furnish it are steps that must be thought out before even starting the design stage and they are a big help in keeping track of the theoretical structural bases on which the environment is designed.

Elegance, harmony and refinement are intrinsic qualities in the concept of luxury: it is not sufficient to pile up expensive items or furniture to create a luxury bedroom, in addition to the fact that they may ruin the “atmosphere” and thus interfere with your rest.

Each furnishing element, each detail and each color combination and light effect must be thought out in such a way to respond in a balanced and harmonious manner to your style, rest and elegance needs.

Planning means predicting what will be the dominant style of your luxury bedroom from the outset.

Although it is possible (and in some cases desirable) to mix classical and contemporary elements, a well-delineated and clearly identifiable stylistic imprint helps to better define the various choices.

Nothing detracts from the fact that changes can be made to the initial design to make the overall picture more harmonious.

It may happen, for example, that in the frenzy of wanting to give a luxurious connotation to the room, you realise that you have given more space to decoration than to some elements that can improve the overall comfort, such as a soft dressing table, a mirror or a dressing table.

Don't worry: during the course of the project, it is always possible to add or remove elements, change the arrangement of furniture, adjust the colour palette or smoothen the style with contaminations that help to enliven it and make it more personal.

2. Pay careful attention to the bed: it is the key element of the entire room

The bed is without a doubt the focal point of the bedroom, both from a functional and strictly stylistic point of view (color, texture, and finishes).

It is possible to state that it is the actual bed to dictate the amount and the aesthetics of the entire room since it is the fulcrum around which a luxury bedroom is designed. In addition, it is the major wellness factor for your good night sleep: if the bed frame and the mattress are not quality ones, say goodbye to good rest.

Some of the major 2022 trends for a luxury bedroom is the centrality of the bed, also understood in terms of size: to combine comfort and luxury, there is nothing better than a comfortable and spacious bed.

If the square footage of the room permits, a central location in the middle of the room is also conceivable. Centrality in this case would be not only symbolic but literal.

If you love the timeless elegance of neoclassical style, choose one of the beds from the Donatello collection: the imposing and sculptural structure, characterised by the straight line of the upper part of the headboard, is softened by the golden frieze, the central oval decoration, the sophisticated decorative motif and the warm colour of the walnut finish, symbol of the great Made in Italy furniture-making tradition.

If, on the other hand, you want to create a lighter and more contemporary atmosphere in your bedroom, rely on the sober and refined luxury of the Adora collections.

The bed from the Diamante collection for example, represents the perfect combination of simplicity and luxury.

The light-coloured headboard illuminates the space with masterly elegance, while the square, minimalist design is enhanced by the wood/gold frame that recalls the dimension of luxury.

The same function for the gold-coloured metal feet, which on the one hand make the structure slender, adding a touch of lightness, and on the other embellish the figure.

Even the pillows may work as elegant decorative elements, just as the blanket and the quilt.

The choice of a precious and rich-looking fabric, their matching to the chosen style and the other furniture will help significantly in increasing the feeling of luxury provided.

3. Colours and light are a pillar of the bedroom

We have often talked about color as a macro-structure of interior design for the home, giving significant importance to the choice of the color palette and combination: these choices start first of all from the selected style, which is important in order to set the chromatic tone.

Luxury is not made by color, but it can be enhanced by it: neutral hues and mono-chromatic combinations (accompanied by more or less bright and lively accents) help in highlighting the decorative elements and the lines and materials that are the true bearers of luxury in your bedroom.

When designing a room, architects and interior designers often play with the chromatic power of furniture, complements and fabrics, on colour combinations and on the lighting system.

Colour and light, in fact, are the elements that, more than others, manage to create atmospheres and bring the 'quid' of charm and suggestion that the bedroom needs to resemble the famous suites in luxury hotels.

The bedroom of a home, however, unlike a hotel bedroom, must combine stylistic perfection and sumptuous furnishings with a warm, familiar and 'lived-in' feel.

In what way? Through customisation, which can be declined in various ways, from the inclusion of books, photographs, objects that hold special emotional significance, travel memories, to the design of a dynamic lighting system that combines contemporary chandeliers ceiling and led backlighting for the bed.

Wallpaper also acts as a customising element, giving character and uniqueness to both a contemporary or classic bedroom.

4. Choose furniture of value and model them with harmony

Light and colour shape the luxurious atmosphere of the bedroom, regardless of whether the style is classical, neoclassical, art nouveau, art deco or whether the room has a sophisticated contemporary feel.

Similarly, the luxury of a room is clearly recognisable by the quality of the furniture, the quality of the wood and other materials, and the sophistication of the finishes and decorations.

There are also a series of home décor elements (in some cases not often used), most of the time added more for aesthetic reasons than for actual practical use, that can definitely boost the luxury appearance of the bedroom, always keeping in mind the requirements related to materials, quality of manufacturing, harmony and more.

Below, you find a few examples of them to complete the design of your luxury bedroom.

  • Large mirror
  • Dressing table
  • Velvet chairs/armchairs and
  • Carpets and curtains

Flaunt luxury by choosing Made in Italy quality

Choosing a Made in Italy bedroom, with attention to every detail and embellished with fine finishes, means giving an invaluable value to the furnishing project.

If the quality of the raw material is lacking (just like for cooking recipes, to return to the initial example), there can be no luxury and elegance, but neither can there be harmony, design, comfort and sartorial quality.

Choose the style that best represents you and give life to a dream bedroom.
